Kat Dennings: I didn’t realise the effect 2 Broke Girls has had on waitresses
Kat Dennings stars in US sitcom 2 Broke Girls and has recently been in London filming Thor 2. She’s tell Metro how she likes to lead a quiet life spent knitting and watching Downton Abbey.
Your schedule has you jetting between London and LA – how are you coping?
Pretty badly. For example, in Thanksgiving Week we filmed the TV show on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning I flew to London and worked for two weeks, including weekends. I flew home on the Tuesday night and went back to work on Wednesday morning. That’s an extreme though. I will probably never ever do that again. It’svery hard to juggle two characters, two schedules and jetlag. The London-LA jetlag is really rough.
You look good on it.
That’s because I’m not eating and there’s stress involved. I’m telling you the truth. I eat but also get stressed. Then I get nauseous and stop eating. Now I know why people get so skinny. I used to be: ‘What are they on?’ But I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.
When will you be less stressed?
I’m sleeping for the first eight days of this year. Don’t call me, don’t write, don’t text me because I’m sleeping. Beep! Do not disturb.
You’ve a successful film career. What made you want to do TV simultaneously?
Truthfully, I wasn’t looking to do any TV because I was having such a great time with films. But because 2 Broke Girls was created by Michael Patrick King [longtime Sex And The City producer] and Whitney Cummings [writer and comedian], I was like: ‘If I’m going to do it, this is the one to do.’ They basically just seduced me into dinner. I had sushi with them and I said: ‘Yes, I’ll do it.’ We didn’t even talk about the show.
You call yourself a nerd. Are you?
I really don’t go out. I don’t even go to parties. Ever. I just stay home. I knit and I watch movies. That’s basically my entire life.
What do you knit?
Hats and scarves for friends and my boyfriend. I knitted him a beautiful alpaca scarf when we first met, which probably sealed the deal because it was some of my best work.
When were you first on a set?
I did a crisps commercial when I was nine. And I think the evils of Hollywood reared their heads then, because it was for crisps that never made it to the market. We were shooting on top of a mountain in Pennsylvania or New York or some weird, freezing place. And we were pretending it was summer. They opened the bag of crisps, poured them in the garbage and then they put regular crisps in the bag. At that moment, I was like, ‘Something’s up!’ They knew those weren’t good. They knew!
Is there anything you can tell us about Thor 2?
I can’t tell you a lot. I don’t know exactly what they’re releasing, so I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say. And if I say the wrong thing, I’m going to probably be assassinated. The experience has been fantastic. I think the atmosphere of this movie is going to feel a lot more authentic for fans. I think that will be really cool.
What do you watch on TV?
Downton Abbey. But I have to watch the whole thing on DVD. I can’t wait a week to watch the next one. I just got a TiVo for free because I was a presenter at the Emmys and they gave me one. Can you believe I didn’t even have one? I watch TV the old-fashioned way usually but now I don’t have any time at home to relax, I get the DVDs. And I watch shows on iTunes. I like Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch. I just like saying that name.
You’re a waitress on 2 Broke Girls. Any good waitress stories?
I went to Boston with my boyfriend recently for his little sister’s graduation and we were at some oyster restaurant. This waitress who is in her sixties came over and said: ‘I have to tell you, it’s mine and my friend’s favourite show.’ Her friend, also in her sixties, came over. They’ve been waitresses forever and it was their favourite show that they watched together. It was their thing. Until then, I hadn’t really thought too deeply about how it might be affecting waitresses and how it’s really cool to be a voice for them. Also I’ve never had more waitresses and waiters be so nice to me before.
You have a cupcake business in 2 Broke Girls. Do you steer clear of cupcakes in private?
I actually went into a bakery to order cupcakes and someone in line knew the show. I thought: ‘Well, I’m never going to do this again. Ever.’ So cupcakes and I are through in real life, not in the show. Kat and cupcakes are through. I just wanted a delicious treat without being recognised but apparently that’s too much to ask.
Have you started thinking about having children?
I do think about that. But I got succulent plants instead because you can’t kill them. I fostered some kittens recently and I almost killed myself. It’s so hard. So a family will definitely happen and I can’t wait. But when I see babies I get the feeling that it will be a while.
Wow, I haven't been on LJ in so long they changed a lot of stuff on here. I love the new posting system!
